Breathtaking

It has been four years since Stonewall Resort opened its Arnold Palmer-designed course in Roanoke, W.Va., and the layout is the same as the day it debuted -- tremendous.

Nestled at the foothills of the Alleghenies and bordered by the second-largest lake (26 miles long) in West Virginia, Stonewall Resort is among the best Palmer courses in the country. It can be as enjoyable as it is challenging -- the course measures 7,149 yards from the tips -- and the surrounding scenery and wildlife only enhance the experience.

The course has just about everything. Par 3s that play over water, par 4s that cut across wetlands and have subtle elevation changes and par 5s that weave through hardwoods and evergreens and around mounded sand bunkers. The 183-yard second hole might be the best par 3 in West Virginia; and the elevated tee shot at No. 13, a 450-yard par 4, is almost as enticing as the view from the new Adirondack-style clubhouse and restaurant, which majestically overlooks the lodge and lake.

Stonewall Resort is less than 2 1/2 hours from Pittsburgh, approximately 40 minutes south of Clarksburg, W.Va., and golf packages are available. Call, 1-888-278-8150, or go online at stonewallresort.com.
